150,000 to 180,000 a year if they are successful in getting a lot of clients
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics the estimated mean annual wage for a psychiatrist as of May 2008 is, $154,050. This would amount to $74.06 an hour.
This however depends on where you work and how much you work. At an academic facility, your position (Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor) determines how much you get paid, and any grants you receive from research. Heads of departments can make near $400,000 depending on the University. Private practice physicians will make more than the general estimate above. Since they control their salary/schedule, many can make around $250,000 if they charge a lot and if they have a large number of patients.
