Oil and gas deposits form from what?

Oil and gas deposits form primarily from the remains of ancient marine organisms, such as plankton and algae, that accumulated on the ocean floor millions of years ago. Over time, these organic materials were buried under layers of sediment and subjected to heat and pressure, leading to chemical transformations that converted them into hydrocarbons. This process, known as maturation, results in the formation of oil and natural gas within porous rock formations, which can then be trapped by impermeable layers, creating reservoirs.
