Are aboriginals and Torres strait islanders the same?

The indigenous people in Australia were called Aboriginals / Aborigines by the early English.

In recent times, a distinction has been made between the Torres Straight Islanders (who originally settled in the very tropical north) and the Aboriginals, who were elsewhere in the country. Both the Torres Straight Islanders and the Aboriginals are Indigenous Australians.
