How do you time a 1999 Honda 400ex?

first you take the alen key sockets off the left case. you have to top off the piston by lining up the marks . there should be a T on the magneto when your turning over the motor . line it up with that. take the valve cover off . the cam gear there will be two lines .line those up exactly with the edge of the head .then slide the timing chain on the gear . while makeing sure the lines are still lined up.put the valve cover back on . make sure there is enough oil in the resevor and start it up . it should start right up
