Blockade by sea and division of the South at the Mississippi. The primary strategy was to isolate the South and prevent them from obtaining goods and supplies from other countries. This strangled them economically, they couldn't sell cotton and didn't have money to buy military supplies. The next was to split the Confederacy, capturing the Mississippi River and prevent goods and supplies coming across from the western states.
