The planes did not lose control, but were hijacked, and intentionally crashed.
The September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States was planned, orchestrated, and carried out by terrorists who were affiliated with Al-Qaeda, the extremist Sunni Islamist militant group founded by, now deceased, Osama bin Laden. The Al-Qaeda terrorists were the ones who hijacked four planes, and caused them to crash. The first plane was intentionally flown into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York. Initially, reporters, authorities, and the viewing public thought this was possibly an accident. When the second plane flew directly into the South Tower, it was clear that this was an intentional terrorist attack. The third plane was crashed into the U.S. Pentagon building causing severe damage. By this time, the passengers of the fourth hijacked plane were able to make cell phone calls, and learned the fate of the other three planes, so they heroically charged the terrorists which resulted in the plane crashing in a field outside of Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
