It is estimated that over 44,000 native Americans saw military service during World War 2. In addition around 40,000 worked in jobs for the war industry. A total of more than 150,000 native Americans contributed directly in industrial, agricultural and military aspects of the American war effort.

Joseph Medicine Crow High Bird, last war chief of the Crow tribe, was recently given a Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Bronze Star Medal and the French Légion d'honneur for his exploits during WW2 as a scout with the US 103rd Infantry Division. These deeds also earned him the four traditional coups which granted him war chief status. He is said to have worn warpaint beneath his uniform and he sang a traditional Crow victory song as he stole German officer's horses.
