Joseph Campbell was raised as a Roman Catholic, and although he struggled with his faith at times he was a devout believer at the end of his life. He was a professor of comparative mythology at Sarah Lawerence College in NY. He wrote several books including The Hero With a Thousand Faces which inspired George Lucas to produce Star Wars. His academic works follow Carl Jung's theory and focus on searching for a monomyth and on archetypal literary criticism.
