Some of the problems are

  • drought/little rain
  • heavy winters
  • insects attacking crops
  • Indian raids
  • isolation/ Women left widows and unable to defend self/family
  • no medical care. Women and children often suffered the most in this area. Many pregant women lost children/lives due to lack of medical care.
  • cattle/cows rustled
  • poor housing. The sod houses were made of hard dirt/grass and were one room. Often insects/snakes in the sod came/dropped in the house. The sod also leaked when it rained and was cold in the winters.
  • Imagine having to walk 10 miles to the next farm if there is a problem even if it was snowing or a blizzard.
  • bandits raiding the family
  • cattle/cows die of disease
  • lack of food/supplies/lack of ability to get supplies
