What did Jonas do instead of the original escape plan and why?

Jonas didn't do the original plan because when he got home that night in his Family unit, his father told him that the new child, Gabriel will be released. He immediately decided that by midnight, he will take Gabriel with him and they will go together to Elsewhere. He didn't have the chance to say goodbye to the Giver since everything happened all of a sudden. The ending also is up to you, you can either decide that Jonas and Gabe reached the "Elsewhere" or the most obvious answer, they died.
