What is the average speed of a fighter jet?

Most modern fighter jets max out at about 2 or 2 and a half times the speed of sound.

Most aircraft however cruise at subsonic speeds (under the speed of sound) so that they don't need to use afterburners which guzzle down fuel.

That's changing however with the F-22 and latest Russian fighters being able to sustain supersonic flight (supercruise) without using afterburners.
