How did Eli Whitney die?

Some sources say he died of prostate cancer in 1825, at the age of 59. But other sources say he died of unspecified causes: one obituary said he died of "a long and distressing illness." Prostate cancer was a relatively unknown disease in 1825, and it is worth questioning whether his fatal illness was something the medical world back then could have identified.
