The first Philippine flag with the red and blue bars, white triangle, sun and three stars was first adopted in 1898:
- The white triangle represents equality.
- The blue stripe in the upper right represents peach, truth, and justice.
- The red stripe in the lower right represents patriotism and courage.
- The sunburst with eight rays represents the first eight provinces that fought against Spain.
- The three stars symbolize Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao.
