What is milorganite?

Milorganite is organic nitrogen fertilizer produced by the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District for over 85 years. Milorganite is great for beginning and experienced gardeners because it's completely goof proof, so you can't screw it up.

It's actually little microscopic organisms that are used to clean wastewater. Once these critters digest the solids out of the water they are kiln dried and formed into fertilizer granules for easy application.

The drying process insures they are basically pathogen free. Milorganite is tested daily and weekly much more than the government requires and meets the U.S. EPA's Exceptional Quality standards.

It's safe for kids, pets and wildlife and won't burn your grass or plants.

It's also good for the environment. In a continuous effort to be sustainable Milorganite is pumping methane gas from a nearby landfill for the heat-drying process -- reducing the use of fossil fuel.

Recent University research found the phosphorous in Milorganite is non-leaching and stays in the soil for plants to use, making it safe to use on lawns, gardens, and near wells and waterways.

In addition, as soil microorganisms work on the Milorganite to release the nutrients they also release the phosphorous and potassium bound to the soil making these nutrients available for the plants. Given these characteristics, Milorganite is ideal for Low Input Lawn Care (LILac), a strategy to reduce the use of lawn care products while maintaining healthy turf grass.
