Monolopolies crushed small businesses across the nation because they couldn't compete with the low prices that many larger businesses could keep. As a result there businesses would go bankrupt and then be bought up by monopoly's. also monopoly's like the railroad, could jack up the prices on hulls, and in many small towns commerce was killed and many moved to cities and other urban areas to seek job oppurtunities.
