Farts, or gas, are produced in the digestive system and can escape through the rectum even when poop is present. The gas is often trapped in the intestines, and when the pressure builds up, it can find a way to be released, sometimes alongside or independent of stool. The anatomy of the rectum allows for gas to pass through a different pathway than solid waste, enabling the release of gas without necessarily expelling feces.
