During the time of the Ottoman empire the nations of the Balkans united to form an order of religious knight to block the advance of the empire into Europe. Just as there was the Knight Templer, the Knights Hospitaler, Teutonic Knights: the Order in the Balkans was The Order of the Dragon. Many surnames from this region of the world take their origins from this order of chivalry. Draco was a dragon who being caught up in the turmoil of the religious wars on a couple of occasions chose to side with the christian forces. This was not a decision of any great reasoning, more of a coin toss sort of situation. He had to assist one side so chose the christian. In gratitude the christian forces awarded him the name Draco in much the same way other Knight chose a Dragon related surname.
