What is thought to have happened to the lapetos Ocean?

It is believed that the Lapetus Ocean closed as a result of tectonic plate movements, with the collision of the Eurasian and North American plates causing the formation of the Appalachian Mountains and the eventual closure of the ocean basin. Subduction of the oceanic crust beneath the continental crust also contributed to its closure.
