In the past, Algeria was known as "Algiers" after its capital city, which was an important center during the Ottoman Empire. The region was also referred to as the "Regency of Algiers" when it was under Ottoman rule from the 16th century until the French invasion in 1830. Prior to that, it was part of various Berber kingdoms and later influenced by Arab and Islamic cultures. Additionally, during the Roman Empire, the area was known as "Numidia."
