What is the source of coal energy?

Dead marsh plants.

The majority of coal (and the best grades: bituminous and anthracite) is from plants that died during the Carboniferous (this was before the first dinosaurs lived). Small amounts of very low grade coal (lignite and peat) are much more recent (with some still forming now).
