Being a cop is personally rewarding because you get to know that you are helping people. You will almost always start off as a patrol officer and later can move on to detective or promote to sergeant. The pay usually starts in the low 30's but a detective or sergeant can easily make 100k a year or more with overtime. Most departments include generous benefit packages that include very good health and dental plans at low or no cost to the employee. Some cities also include education reimbursement for college, longevity pay, uniform allowances, specialty pay, etc. In most municipalities the retirement is 50% after 20 years if service.
