He thinks he's far too unworthy for her, or he is just trying to be nice, or he does really think he is very unworthy and is in a sense justifying him sticking around by having you refute any and all excuses you give him. Like Edward Cullen (I know saying this is so cliche seeing as how every one uses him in analogies, but its the one that easiest to understand). He thought himself so very unworthy of Bella's love, he would give her and himself excuse after excuse, and in turn, as a "subservient act", promised he could not deny her anything. what did she do? she refuted all his excuses, giving him all the reasons why she needed him. looking at their situation, what did you think his actions implied? granted you can't get into the guy's head in your situation, but if you like him, up and ask him what his feelings are for you, don't let him avoid the question though.
