Under the U.S. Aids to Navigation System, red buoys are used to mark the right side of a channel when entering from sea, following the "red-right-return" rule. They are typically cylindrical in shape and may have a topmark, often a red light or a reflective surface. Red buoys are also often numbered with even numbers that increase as you move upstream.
