What ''power'' does poems and plays have?

Depends on the poem or play. Some have the power to scare people, some encourage people to do things they have never considered doing before, some have the power to make you smile or laugh or cry.

Shakespeare's sonnets had some power in them. Especially the first ones. Read them, if you don't understand them, find some analyses for them, and go from there.
