Believe in "Bloody Mary" or not, she did indeed exist and the moniker, "Bloody Mary" is not without historical merit. Mary Tudor, the first child born to King Henry VIII and his first wife Catherine of Aragon seemed almost predestined to her fate. Mary's mother; the Spanish Catherine of Aragon's marriage to King Henry VIII was a political checkmate made by the English, anxious to secure their naval supremacy over Spain and Portugal. Not a love match by any standard the marriage displeased King Henry and the birth of a daughter in Mary did little to encourage (the King's) pleasure. The King was soon involved with his future second wife and mother of Queen Elizabeth I; Anne Boelyn and Mary was sent away from court. Later both she and her half-sister Elizabeth lived together as alternating captive/royal princess' depending on the kings will. Mary dealt with her uncertain station by retreating into her Roman Catholic faith in an increasingly hysterical state of morbid religiOSity which did little to serve her ailing health.
