What are the motivation functions?

Without establishing a motive for murder, you cannot prove without reasonable doubt that a person intentionally killed someone, or committed any given crime. Motives produce intentions.
Motives are things that cause people to act in a certain way, the object of a person's action - for example 'his motive was revenge'
Motives are what drives a character to do something. This helps move the plot.
