The duke and king were characters in Mark Twain's "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" who pretended to be royalty in order to scam people out of their money. They were con artists who traveled with Huck and Jim down the Mississippi River causing mischief and trouble wherever they went. In the end, they were exposed and faced justice for their crimes.
