What conditions trigger a La Niña episode?

La Niña episodes are triggered by stronger-than-average trade winds that push warm surface waters in the tropical Pacific Ocean to the western side, causing upwelling of colder water along the coast of South America. This leads to a cooling of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean and can result in changes to global weather patterns.
