Due to restrictions and difficulties in shipping produce people tended to eat locally grow produce rather than exotic vegetables from abroad. In the United Kingdom home grown cops would have included; potatoes, cabbage, cauliflowers, swedes, turnips, beetroots, peas, kale, spinach, etc. A popular slogan of the time was "Dig for Victory," which meant utilise your gardens etc for growing food rather than flowers. "Victory Gardens" were popular in America, and people grew their own vegetables, sometimes in backyards, sometimes in a nearby lot. Rationing of gasoline and food products was the norm; gardens helped ease the restrictions imposed by rationing, and were a morale boost.
