i believe its a conspiracy between companies so we can carry on getting ripped off and in a whole lifetime spend thousands on these small breakable cheap things, jus imagine if we could have headphones which would last us years the big companies would not make monet, no jokes aside i believe they mess up when they get tangled and the wires inside break away from the base of the socket and thus sound quality go's, also i think cos they also use thin bendy material, they should make them heavier but again would not be soo light.
The earbuds along with most other headphones and headtsets have very fragile soldering and jacks so they always break. Given how small the buds are it is obvious that the connections are likewise going to be small and fragile.
I think the key to making your buds last is to treat them very gently, in particular when you are taking them out of your ears. Do not yank them out of your ears by pulling the cords. Grip the buds themselves to remove them.
