See the last 2 episodes of the eighth, and final, season. Trudy left a videotape in the box she left Monk as her last Xmas present. It explained an affair she had with a law professor, who ended up killing her so as not to expose a secret of his and ruining his career. Won't say more, see the episodes! They sure are worth it. :)
