How do you 'die inside'?

The phrase "to die inside" generally refers to a psychological state of mind where life has become unbearable or painful. You have no hope or have given up and depression sets in. This is usually due to some extreme trauma like the death of a loved one, physical harm or even financial devastation. The path to some kind of normalcy can be daunting.
