Who were the Mesquakie?

The Mesquakie or Meskwaki are also known as the Fox tribe, who have long been in close proximity to the Sac (or Sauk or Saukie) tribe - indeed they are often termed "Sac and Fox" as if they were one people.

Their name is really Meshkwahkihaki, meaning Red Earth [People], from a tribal origin story that says they were originally formed by the Creator from red clay.
