  • Vasco da Gama (Dom Vasco da Gama) was the first European (Portuguese) explorer to round the Cape of Good Hope and find a sea route to India, landing in Calicut (India) in 1498.
  • Bartolomeu Dias (Bartholomew Diaz) was the first European explorer to round the Cape of Good Hope in 1488. He ventured only a little way up the east coast of Africa (into the Indian ocean) before returning to Portugal. Dias originally named the Cape as the "Cape of Storms", but this was later renamed Cape of Good Hope by King John II of Portugal as it represented the possibility of a trade route with the East.
