When does parody not work?

Parody is much less effective, surprisingly, when it is too good. Effective parody must exaggerate the recognizable features of the work it is parodying. In so doing, it cannot be a really good copy of the original, since those features must be distorted. As a result, a really good imitation of something does not work well as a parody.
