How many quarts of transmission fluid are in a 2001 BMW x5 4.4?

When you do a drain and fill, you'll need 6 quarts, but will only use about 5.4 of that. Drain using drain plug, then replace drain plug and fill using the fill plug to overflow, start car, run through gears, add more to fill plug until overflow, then replace fill plug. This replaces about 50% of the total fluid in the trans, which is close to 12 quarts.
