The thermosphere is a layer of Earth's atmosphere located above the mesosphere and below the exosphere, extending from about 85 km (53 miles) to 600 km (373 miles) in altitude. It is characterized by a dramatic increase in temperature with height, reaching up to 1,500 degrees Celsius (2,732 degrees Fahrenheit) or more due to the absorption of high-energy solar radiation. The thermosphere contains a small number of air molecules, which are highly energized and can lead to phenomena like the auroras.
