Oregon is divided into two zones, each of which has two telephone area codes.

  • Portland, Salem, Astoria, and the northwest corner of the state use area codes 503 and 971.
  • Eugene, Corvallis, Bend, Medford, and the rest of the state use area codes 541 and 458.

Both zones are overlays, so you must dial the area code and number for local calls (e.g., 503-555-0123).

The telephone country code for the USA (plus Canada and 18 Caribbean-ish islands) is +1.

(The plus sign means "insert your international access prefix here." From a GSM mobile phone, you can enter the number in full international format, starting with the plus sign. The most common prefix is 00, but North America (USA, Canada, etc.) uses 011, Japan uses 010, Australia uses 0011, and many other countries use different prefixes.)
