When was the last time a commoner became the queen of England?

The present queen's mother, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, became queen because she was married to King George VI but the theoretical power remained with her husband. Even so, there is no doubt that she was the most popular member of the British Royal Family in the last century until Princess Diana came on the scene.
