How did elk grove ca get its name?

Elk Grove, California, received its name from the nearby Elk Grove Hotel, which was established in the 1850s by a local settler named John E. McKinley. The hotel was named for the area's abundance of elk that roamed the region at the time. As the community developed around the hotel, the name Elk Grove became associated with the growing settlement. Eventually, it was incorporated as a city in 2000.
