George the 3rd (George William Frederick), King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, was the first son of Frederick Louis, Prince of Wales and Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, and the grandson of George the 2nd. He was born on June 4, 1738 and died on January 29, 1820. George the 3rd lived for 81 years and 239 days and reigned for 59 years and 96 days. Both his life and his reign were longer than those of any of his predecessors.

King George the 3rd married Princess Charlotte of Mecklinburg-Strelitz in 1761 and they had 15 children, 9 boys and 6 girls. He suffered from ill-health and mental illness which eventually led to his eldest son, George, Prince of Wales (later King George the 4th), being named as Prince Regent to carry out his father's official royal duties.
