Why are major cites built by rivers?

Because it is a source of survival, without water, we would all be dead, in the olden days, when some older cities were first built, they needed to collect the water themselves (no running water) and having riverss as a water source close by, was a very genious idea. Also, they could leave their pets and farm animals to drink the water freely.
