Who is actually Santa Claus?

By taking "clause" as a spelling error I will say the following:

Yes, there was a Santa Nicolaus who donated money to the poor supposedly in medieval times in what is now Turkey.

However, this Nicolaus did not wear red and white and did not ride a sleigh. He is more likely to have been riding a mule.
