American west and California. He got into legal problems because he "salted" a mine making investors think they would get rich. Fremont lead an interesting life. As a young man he was with Lewis and Clark, helped establish the Bear Flag republic of California, married a Senators daughter, and ran for president. Yet, he died broke and alone.
