What changes taken place during evaporation?

During evaporation, a liquid turns into a gas or vapor by gaining energy from its surroundings. The molecules of the liquid gain enough energy to overcome the attraction forces holding them together in the liquid state. As they gain energy, the molecules move more rapidly and eventually break free into the surrounding environment as a gas.
