He probably just wants to look at you. The stereotypical action is to close your eyes, as its supposed to show some sort of focus, or trust or "getting lost in the moment." Just because it's said to be "the way things are done" doesn't mean it has to be. If he wants to look at you when he's kissing you, it's probably because he likes that he's kissing you, and wants to see you.
