A man once told her that she was a natural at acting, and he would write her so that she could get in the movies. But, she never got the letter, and she thinks that it was because her mother took it. Her mother didn't want Curley's wife to be in the movies, and didn't let her go into the business. She married Curley to get away from her mom.
