What is a pen of a squid?

Squids don't have pens. They squirt ink from a bodily orifice in order to deter predators.

actually, inside the mantle is the pen of the squid, a hard protrusion which is all that remains of the squid's shelled ancestors. (i got this from chacha to do my bio hw)
