How far could a revolutionary war canon fire a shot?

Standard shot (the round, metal cannonball) from a typical mobile field artillery piece in the late 1700s was 3 inches in diameter, and weighed between 6 and 8 pounds. They had an effective range of 500-800 yards against infantry on a clear field.

Naval guns were much heavier, with 20- or 30- pound shot typical, though effective ranges were less than 200 yards.

Siege howitzers and mortars could throw 20-pound solid shot 500 yards, or lighter shells twice that distance.
