What is the most important task of the Executive Branch?

This is a point of debate, so this is only my opinion.

The single most important task of the federal executive branch is national defense. The president is the commander-in-chief of the armed services, and as such, he is responsible for national defense. Without adequate national defense, no other function of government is important, because we would be invaded and conquered by other more powerful countries.
